Bali’s SugarSand is an uber trendy beachfront spot for creative Japanese eats and cocktails with a view

SugarSand restaurant in Bali

Tucked behind the lobby of Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach, beyond the resort’s shimmering swimming pool and amidst a verdant garden of ferns, lies SugarSand.

This uber trendy all-day beachfront dining destination promises to infuse Indonesian shores with the charm of a Japanese neighbourhood, featuring a menu of creative Asian favourites served izakaya-style.

Recently revamped, SugarSand echoes the essence of local Balinese culture in its design. It boasts a stunning infinity pool, surrounded by plush daybeds, offering a serene retreat amid the vibrant energy of Seminyak’s beachfront.

The restaurant’s second floor unveils an open-air lounge, where guests can revel in breathtaking panoramic views of the Indian Ocean – a perfect backdrop for relaxation and private parties.

Heading the kitchen is Chef Syamsul Rizal, who brings a background in prestigious kitchens including the legendary Japanese restaurant Nobu plus various international cruise liners and renowned global hotels.

The menu at SugarSand features a wide range of flavourful dishes, ranging from sushi to salads and beyond.

The corn pomegranate salad, a zesty starter, combines grilled sweet corn, luscious pomegranate seeds, and crisp cucumber.

Enhanced with the tang of feta cheese and the zing of yuzu dressing, this dish is a skilfully executed blend of sweet, savoury, and tangy notes.

Another menu highlight is the sizeable cheese flatbread, an unassuming yet irresistible dish, topped generously with a trio of cheeses – velvety Brie, robust Parmesan, and smooth feta, all melting over a layer of fresh tomato sauce.

From the sushi section, the California roll shines, encasing tender snow crab, creamy avocado, and crunchy cucumber in a snug rice roll.

The tobiko adds a hint of ocean flavours, while a touch of harissa mayo introduces a subtle heat and complexity.

Dessert enthusiasts will love the yuzu cheese tart, which balances the tang of curd with a sweet mango passionfruit sauce.

Complemented by a coconut sorbet and a crisped meringue sprinkled with dehydrated zest, it’s a creative dish that tastes as good as it looks.

Not to be outshone, SugarSand’s “Balixologists” create an innovative array of Japan-inspired cocktails, alongside classic favourites, with the bar’s signature Slow-Cooked G&Ts (infused with dehydrated fruit) a must-try.

With superb cuisine and a relaxed ambiance, SugarSand is a must-visit in Seminyak. Whether for a laid-back lunch by the pool, a romantic starlit dinner, or cocktails with a view, it offers an experience that combines excellence with the Japanese-infused spirit of Bali.
